Help & how-to
Everything you need to get a clean transparent PNG in a couple of minutes.
The 4 steps
- Drop your image onto the big box on the home page. You can also click the box to browse, or press
Ctrl+Vto paste a picture from the clipboard. - Choose an engine. Fast for a flat backdrop, AI for hair, fur and busy scenes.
- Click “Remove background”. The cut-out appears over a checkerboard - the checkerboard means “transparent”.
- Click “Download PNG”. The file is saved to your Downloads folder.
Fast mode vs AI mode
Fast mode (no download)
Fast mode looks at the edges of the picture, works out the colour of the background and removes every pixel that is connected to the border and close to that colour. It runs in a few milliseconds and needs nothing but your browser.
It is the right choice for: product shots on white or grey, logos, screenshots, scanned documents and flat wallpapers.
AI mode (best quality)
AI mode runs a real segmentation model (ONNX + WebAssembly) inside your browser. It understands the actual object, so hair, fur, glasses, thin structures and complicated backgrounds work much better.
- The model is downloaded once (about 42 MB) and then kept in the browser cache, so later images are ready in seconds.
- Nothing about your picture is sent anywhere - the model runs on your device.
- On a phone or a laptop with WebGPU the result comes faster.
Fixing the edges
Almost every cut-out can be improved with a few small moves:
- Keep brush - paint back the part that was cut away by mistake.
- Erase brush - remove a leftover bit of the old background.
- Tolerance (fast mode) - raise it if the background is not fully removed, lower it if the object is losing parts.
- Edge threshold - cuts off the faint, semi-transparent halo around the object.
- Edge shift - negative pulls the edge inwards, positive pushes it outwards.
- Feather - softens the edge, useful for shadows that should stay soft.
- Despill - removes the old background colour that leaked into the soft edges (the classic green-screen glow).
Shortcuts: V move, K keep brush, E erase brush, Ctrl+Enter remove the background, Ctrl+S download.
Export options
- PNG - lossless with a real alpha channel. This is what you want for logos, stickers and product cut-outs.
- WebP - transparent as well, but much smaller files.
- JPG - no transparency, the picture is flattened onto white.
- Trim the empty edges away - cuts the transparent border so the PNG is tight around the object.
- Size - keeps the original size or scales the longest side down to 2048 / 1500 / 1080 / 800 / 512 px.
Batch and ZIP
Add up to 20 images at once. Press “Remove background in all” and the tool works through the list one by one. When everything is ready press “Download all (ZIP)” to get a single archive with all the transparent PNGs.
iPhone photos (HEIC)
HEIC/HEIF photos are decoded directly in your browser, so you can drop them in like any other picture. The first HEIC file loads a small decoder (~2 MB) which is then cached.
Install as an app
- Android (Chrome): tap Install app in the header, or the menu (⋮) → Add to Home screen.
- iPhone / iPad (Safari): tap the Share icon → Add to Home Screen.
- Windows / Mac (Chrome, Edge): click the install icon in the address bar, or the menu → Install PixelCut.
Installed, the tool opens fullscreen and keeps working without internet.
Common questions
Why is the background still visible?
Switch to AI mode - the background is not a flat colour, so the fast engine cannot separate it. You can also raise the Tolerance slider.
Why is a part of my object gone?
Use the Keep brush to paint it back, or lower the Tolerance. In AI mode the Edge shift slider can also grow the object a little.
The result has a white halo
Turn the Despill slider up and add a small amount of Feather. If you took the picture on a white background, a white halo is the background colour bleeding into the soft edge - despill removes exactly that.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Fast mode always works offline. AI mode works offline once the model has been downloaded once.
